THE MERCEDES-BENZ C107 COUPE
First introduced in late 1971/early 1972, the luxurious '107-series' 450 SL Roadster and 450 SLC Coupe were outwardly identical to their '350' (3.5-liter) sister models, though endowed with superior performance courtesy of a more-powerful 4.5-liter V8 engine. Built on a longer wheelbase, the handsome fixed-roof coupe accommodated two rear seat passengers and provided greater boot space than the roadster. A true Youngtimer classic today, these high-quality grand tourers motorcars are gaining popularity and are admired for their iconic lines, strong mechanicals and superior build quality.
THE CAR OFFERED
Known as 'The Green Machine,' this 1976 450SLC is a European model which was reportedly built for the former boss of Dresdner Bank as a high-performance continent crusher. The period AMG body kit, color-keyed Penta alloys, and side vents cut into the front wings hint at what lurks beneath the hood – the mighty Mercedes-Benz M100 6.9-liter V8, which is paired with a 5-speed manual transmission. Typically the reserve of the full-size 450 SEL 6.9 limousine – itself no slouch – the massive engine shoehorned into the SLC is certain to result in a serious 'Bahn burner.'
Finished in Silbergrun Metallic over an appropriately groovy green velour interior, it features a host of tasty period accessories. Visually, the AMG body styling package pairs beautifully with the longer-wheelbase SLC design, which is also enhanced by this car's slim European bumpers and flush headlamps. The cabin is extensively updated with late-70s niceties including a wood-rimmed steering wheel, rare Blaupunkt "Gooseneck" radio controller, Recaro sport seats trimmed in correct Mercedes-Benz velour fabric, electric memory seat controllers, a custom fitted and upholstered roll bar, Schroth harnesses, and even a refrigerated rear compartment.
While in the Barry Taylor collection, this very special 450SLC has been in long-term static indoor storage. It has not been run or started while in the care of Bonhams and will require mechanical recommissioning. Once returned to full health, however, the Green Machine has the potential to shine in any collection of Youngtimer classics and once again hassle Porsches out on the Autobahn.
